FORT LYON NATIONAL CEMETERY

As previously mentioned in "Bent's Forts and Trading Posts, History of Fort Lyon", the site of the old fort's location was moved to it's present site near Las Animas in 1865. The old fort had been abandoned and units were moved to the new site. Bodies of dead soldiers that had been buried at the Old Fort Lyon Cemetery were hauled by wagon to Kit Carson and then shipped by train to be reburied in Fort Leavenworth.

Cemetery internments for Fort Lyon have been extracted from the "Southeast Colorado Cemetery Index", by the Prowers County Genealogical Society, 1994. In extracting these names, there were six listed from Fort Lyon VA Cemetery #1. This cemetery is located north of the town of Prowers in Bent County. I believe that this would be the site of the old Fort Lyon. Fort Lyon #2 contains the names of those that were interned at the new site near Las Animas.
