The county was named after Lucius Weld, the first Territorial Secretary. Although St. Vrain was the first county seat, over the next sixteen years the county seat was moved from St. Vrain to Latham to Evans to Greeley to Evans and by 1877 it was returned to Greeley where it remains today.
