Mrs. Mary Katen
Mary A. Bilyeu was born near East St. Louis, IL, December 7, 1838, and died June 5, 1923, at the home of her only child, A.S. Powell near Canton, Nebr.
Near the commencement of the Civil War she was united in marriage with Lieut. Benj. P. Powell, and lived in New Orleans until the close of the war, after which they returned to Illinois and lived at Mulberry Grove until about 1876. To this union one son, A.S. Powell was born.
In the late Seventies she and her son came to Nebraska and for a time lived near, and later in Scotia.
About 1883 she was again married uniting with John H. Katen.
For the past several years she has made her home with her son. Over a Year ago she suffered a paralytic stroke, and has not been well since.
In her early life she accepted Christ as her Savior and was, for many years a member of the Christian Church. A few years ago at Lincoln she joined the Seven Day Adventists Church and has remained steadfast in her faith.
One son, and an only sister, Mrs. Emma Gillespie of Chadron, besides twelve grand children and eight great grand children survive her. Rev. Crawford, assisted by Rev. O.U. McProud, performed the funeral services Wednesday afternoon Interment was in the local cemetery.
