with the American History and Genealogy Project!Mary Fickel was my great great grandmother. I have known her name for most of my life, yet until recent years I knew very little about her. She was born September 21, 1832 and died October 16, 1898. She first married James Wilson, and then in 1857 she married John H. Madden. Her life between 1850 and 1857 is still a mystery, but we do know one distinct fact. She had a son named Joshua Wilson, who was born August 16, 1851.
Mary Fickel was born into a long line of Fickels, starting with the immigrant Michael Fickel who immigrated to the United States in 1734 on the Ship Hope which carried passengers from the Palentine region of Germany. The name has been spelled several different ways - Fikle on the passenger list, Fickle on most legal documents and Fickel by some descendants.
Michael Fickel married Margaret Schleiermacher, eldest daughter of Mathias and Catherine Schleiermacher. The name Schleiermacher has been "Anglicized" to Slaymaker. My particular line comes down through their son, Joseph Fickel who married Elizabeth Tatman, then their son Joseph D. Fickel who married Mary Dusenberry, then their son John, born 1808, father of Mary Fickel. John Fickel married Rachel Barnett in 1829.
