JANET HAMILTON 1787

Janet Hamilton was probably born in December 1787 as she was baptised December 23, 1787 in Palchie, Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland. Her parents were Archibald Hamilton and Janet Small. She married George Meikle, 1785 in Stonehouse, Lanark, Scotland. The Banns were published October 4, 1806. Source: Stonehouse Old Parish Register.

There is a Janet Hamilton listed in the subscribers for the newly formed Stonehouse bible Society in 1813. It would have been quite customary for a married woman to continue using her maiden name. Her husband George and father-in-law James were listed in the subscribers as well. However, it is also possible that her Mother, Janet Small Hamilton was the Janet listed. Source: Stonehouse: Historical and Traditional by Robert Naismith, J.P. FSA 1885, page 88 and 89.

Janet's father was a mason as was her husband George. We suspect that by 1841 her husband was deceased, and her sons had learned the trade of weaving. Janet was working in 1841 as a "Muslin Flowerer" and in 1851 was a "Yarn Winder", both trades associated with the weaving industry.

She died June 11, 1855 at her home in Stonehouse, and is buried in the Old Churchyard Cemetery, adjacent to St. Ninians Cemetery built later.
