PURCHASE

THOMAS, gent, Pejepscot patentee 18 June 1832 with br-in-law George Way of Dorchester, Co. Corset, where he too had liv. (Aspinw.147), supposedly s. of Oliver and Thomasine (Harris) of Holy Trinity par., that city. See Oliver Purchase of Dorchester, Mass.; Jordan(7); N.E. Reg 20; 246; 61;278; waters1:310-2; Lechford, p.219. Here bef. the patent (the exact time can be set no nearer than a recital in deed of July 1684 'near three score years since he came to this country'), he wit. livery of the Vines patent 25 June 1630, and in 1631 entertained Sir Christopher Gardiner (1) whose companion he Mar. Comr. at first ct. at Saco 25 Mar. 1636. In 1639 he yielded to Winthrop and conveyed to Mass., with right of citizenship for self, a tract 4 miles sq on both sides of Androscoggin River except what he might occupy within 7 yrs (Col. Rec. Mass. 1:272). gr.j.Saco et. Sept 1640; this ct. two months before had issued a summons ag. him to answer what might appear, when statement was made that he had conveyed the greater part of his goods and chattels out of the country. He 'afterward acted with every government within reach.' subm. to Plymouth Col. 1654. A gorges comr. 1662, 1664, being one of those later dropped by the King's commission. Mary (Grove) d. in Boston 7 Jan 1655-6; he m. 2nd Elizabeth (Andrews 16) Pike (8), and d. at Lynn, his refuge during the war, 11 May 1678, ag 101 by record. Will, 2 May 1677, gives one-third of all, except the silver plate, to w.; two-thirds to 5 ch.; Mr. Henry Jocelyn and cousins Mr. Oliver P of Hammersmith (Lynn) and Mr. Edw. Allen of Boston, overseers. The inv. incl. 1000 a. at Pejepscot, Wid. Elizabeth m 3d in Lynn Nov 1678 John Blaney, Sr. Ch. (Y.D.4:14-17): Thomas, mariner, eldest s and exec with mo. He m. at Salem 3 Dec 1679 Elizabeth williams. Lost at sea 1681, leaving s. Thomas, b 29 Jan 1679-80 (see Y.D. 16;162). the wid. was still Purchase 30 June 1685. One Elizabeth of Salem m Jonahan Felt (4) in Marbleh, 3 Jan 1694-5. Jane (ag 53 in Sept 1716) m. Oliver Elkins (9) Abraham (+- 46 in Mar. 1713-4), anchorsmith, blacksmith, Salem, m ab. 1695 Ruth Williams; d by 1724; she liv 1748. 5 ch Elizabeth, m. in Marbleh. 20 Dec 1683 John Blaney (jr). The 5th one was likely Sarah, m in Marbleh, 27 Dec 1688 Wm. Bartlett.

"Thomas Purchase Sr: somewhere between 1625 and 1629 he located in Maine and engaged in the fur trade. He was a first settler of the territory of which Brunswick now stands. In 1635 he was one of George's Council and later was sole assistance to the colony commission and was Justice in 1664. In 1675 Indians were hostile; he moved to Lynn. Some records give Elizabeth Andrews as wife of Thomas Jr; some give Elizabeth Williams as his wife.

May have come on the Ship Lyon - appeared in Pejepscot right after ship landed in 1630 (source unknown)

 

King Philip's War

The first recorded action by the Saco Indians in retaliation of years of abuse by the Whites was to sack the house of Thomas Purchase in September 1675, who had lived there around fifty years at the mouth of the Androscoggin River. At the age of 98, Thomas removed his family to the safety of Lynn, Essex County, Masschusetts.
