CLAUDIUS L TOMPKINS
Born - August 3, 1810, presumably in Tennessee.
Parents - William Tompkins and Elizabeth Owens.
Never Married - I do not have any indication that he ever married. I found one source who had that he married a "Nancy". However, after seeing the 1850 census listed below, I feel that whoever saw the census assumed Nancy was his wife. This is an incorrect assumption. Nancy Stearns was a sister of Sarah Ann Loughrey and a widow at the time of the census. She later married John Hannah.
Occupation - the 1850 census says he was a carpenter.
Died - January 22, 1881 at age 70 years. Buried in Mineral Cemetery, Mineral, Bureau County, Illinois.

Full Name:
According to Lynn Kappelman in a letter dated March 28, 2000 "I am certain that the spelling is Claudius and not Claudin - as you note his full name was Claudius Auriluis Tompkins and Elijah named his first son Marcus Auriluis Tompkins."
However, in documents recently sent by Jan Cerbin, his middle initial was "L", not "A". Did he use a shortened middle name for Aurelius perhaps? I have copies below of his original signature may also be read as Claudins, not Claudius. We have the following documents showing "L" and will scan them shortly:
1850 Census (shown below)
April 21, 1855 - Application for Bounty Land - his original signature shows Claudius L. Tompkins (or Claudins L. Tompkins).
Copy of June 18, 1832 Company Muster Roll:
Capt. Willis' Co., Mtd. Vols., 40 Reg't, 4 Brig. Illinois Militia
Black Hawk War
Company Muster-out roll dated in Hennepin, Illinois June 18, 1832
Name: Claudius (or possibly Claudins) L. Tompkins
Enrolled on May 21, 1832 at Hennepin by Col. J. Straun with "00" days for period of service. Remarks - No services rendered. He was not paid.
