ISAAC TOMPKINS

Isaac Denton Tompkins was born December 15, 1820 in Tennessee, the firstborn child of Joseph Tompkins and Celia Cole. There is some discrepancy on his birthyear. The census returns back up the 1820 birthyear. His obituary, listed below, gives his birthyear as 1821 as does his tombstone - sources for both the tombstone and his obituary would have been his second wife.

We believe he came to Bureau County, Illinois with his parents sometime between 1830 and 1840. In 1842, he married Rebecca Carroll, daughter of James Carroll and Eleanor Loughrey. They had eight children total, two of which died as infants and we do not have their names. Rebecca died August 27, 1857. On January 16, 1860 Isaac married his second wife, Mary Carroll Lee - sister of his first wife and widow of James Harrison Lee. Mary and Isaac had four more children together.

From: The Biographical Record of Bureau, Marshall and Putnam Counties, Illinois, 1896, Sketch of William Riley:
At the age of twenty, he secured 160 acres of land in the Mineral area. He and his wife Eveline lived on property until 1852 when they sold the farm and purchased propery in Mineral twp. There they built the first good house in the locality and in 1896 was lived in by
Isaac Tompkins...

OBITUARIES

"By the death of Isaac Tompkins which occurred the 18th from pneumonia, Mineral loses one of her oldest, and most respectable citizens. Honest and upright in all his dealings, not a spot or blemish can be found against his memory. Naturally of a retiring disposition, he neither saught nor accepted any office prefering to remain quietly with his family.

Deceased was born in Tenn. 76 years ago last January. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss
Rebecca Carroll. By this marriage eight children were born, four of them now living, one son and a daughter living in Nebraska, a daughter in Iowa, and a daughter in Tiskilwa. Several years after the death of his first wife, he was married the second time, and by this union four children were born. Mrs Hamrick residing at Wyanet. Two sons Charles and Frank and a daughter Lydia living in Mineral. He is also survived by his wife. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Sunday a.m. and were conducted by Rev. Ward of the M.E. Church of Sheffield. The church was crowded to overflowing (many being obliged to stand on the side walk by the open door) by relatives and friends who came to pay their last respects to the memory of "Uncle Isaac" whom they had loved and honored for so many years. Mr. Prior of Sheffield was director, assisted by Amos Fry. The pall bearers were: Charles Harris, Will Steel, Thomas Jacobs, S. Williams, Ed Walker and Charles Riley. Interment at Fair View Cemetery." Transcribed as written. mls

Source: Physical description from a gentleman who was visiting the cemetery and kindly looked this up for me. I am not releasing his name due to privacy.

This located the tombstone for Isaac Tompkins, Mary Carroll Lee Tompkins, several of their children from one marriage or the other but I have not yet located Rebecca Tompkins tombstone. Her parents are also buried in Fairview Cemetery, so I suspect she is buried here.

There was an eighth child. For a long time, we thought there was a Martha and an Ellen. However, in following Ellen's census, she is enumerated in one of the years as Martha E. However, in 1880 there is a Lizzie Tompkins, age 32, living with Celia Tompkins Jeffers and enumerated as sister. However, no Lizzie or surviving Elizabeth has surfaced in the previous census.
