Joseph Tompkins and Mary Alice Conibear were married November 11, 1877 at the Free Will Baptist Church in Mineral Illinois. When their firstborn child, Mabel, was born in August 1878 Joseph was working as a clerk, presumably in the Conibear General Store where we know he did work. By 1880, they had moved to Aurora, Nebraska where they were farmers. They next moved to Bassett, Nebraska, Fairfax, South Dakota and back to Bassett, Nebraska - they farmed at both locations.

** More than likely one of the Bureau County Illinois Riley families.
*** Milton Bloise Hull and Emily Riley, Bureau County Illinois
**** John L. Sweet and Ella Lowry, Bureau County Illinois. Ella was a Riley descendant.
***** Possibly Hiram Atwood Stone and Sarah Catherine Taylor, Bureau County Illinois. She was a Loughrey descendant.
In Bassett, Joseph joined the Bassett Lodge Number 180 of the Ancient Order of Workmen, one of the early Fraternal organizations/early insurance organizations. When Joseph died in April 1900, the Brothers of the Lodge were a big help to his family. Joseph had fallen from the roof of his barn in November 1899, and died in April 1900. His obituary below does not say, but the family story is that he died of blood poisoning in this fall which would explain the length of time between the fall and his death.
Joseph played the B Flat Bass in the Bassett Silver Cornet Band. In the Republican Herald of May 29, 1890, he is listed as member of the band:

OBITUARIES
Obituary from Bassett newspaper
Joseph Tompkins died April 25, 1900 at the home of his sister, Mrs. Jeffers, where has been staying so as to receive closer medical attention than was possible at his home in the country. He had been sick since last November during which time he has suffered patiently, much pain.
Joseph Tompkins was born near Sheffield, Henry County, Illinois December 10, 1850 where he spent his childhood and youth. He was married to Miss Mary Conibear in 1877. Much of his life has been spent on the frontier coming to Nebraska in 1878 and to Rock County in 1882. He was enthusiastic in whatever he undertook and was always an active worker in anything to improve his fellow man. Those who knew him best honored him most. He took a great delight in his home and set before his fellow men an example for a husband and father.
He leaves a wife and eight children to mourn his loss. Two of his children have died and gone before.
During his long illness his brother Workmen assisted his family in caring for him. He was a charter member of Lodge No 180 and has been one of its most faithful members. The funeral was held in the M.E. Church at Bassett Thursday at 2 P.M., Rev. Geo. A. Hanna preaching the funeral sermon from Psalms 23-4, after which the Workmen took charge of the remains. The body was interred in Crooks cemetery with the usual rites and ceremonies of the order. The attendance at the church and cemetery was the largest for years.

A Scotts Bluff County employee had a fatal stroke enroute to work Monday morning and the pickup truck he was driving ran into the Mead Milling Company office building at 1410 Avenue B.
Ray Tompkins, 64, of 311 West Overland Drive, was hospitalized after the 7:06 accident and died at 4:30 p.m.
Tompkins told police he blacked out. The pickup veered into the center of the Mead off building.
The impact broke a storm window in the building, pushed in the window casing, breaking the plaster. Damage to the building was estimated at $75, that to the pickup at $35.From my notes based on family notes: Before World War I, he worked as a cowboy on various Nebraska ranches.
Served in the U.S. Army during World War I, in the Medical Supply Department B.S. No. 1 and was in several big battles in France. He was in the battle of Chateau Thierry when he was gassed which affected his health for the rest of his life.Never married.
Florence Ann Tompkins - October 31, 1894 in Gregory County, SD
Died August 1982
Married Asa Rappold Klock on August 04, 1915 in ??

My notes of Florence Tompkins based on various family notes and sources: Played baseball on the Sheffield High school team for three years, two of which they won the championship game at Princeton, Illinois. There is a picture of their team posted on the Bureau County, Illinois website as well as on my various Tompkins pages.
Received a teaching certificate from a normal school in Princeton, Illinois and taught school at a rural school in a Belgian settlement north of Sheffield.
After Asa's death, she continued to run the Shellgas business and added washing machines. After World War II, she built a new store in the suburbs and was a General Electric franchise that covered three states. She operated this until 1953 when she sold and became House Mother for Chi Omega Sorority at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. She retired in 1960 for health reasons, but in 1965 she went to work again as House Mother to Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity in Vermillion. She retired the last time in 1969 and spent her remaining years enjoying her family.
