"Another incident occurred when Billie and Sampson Cole had been to the salt works at the mouth of Cherokee in Lampasas County after salt. This was during the Civil War. They had pack horses loaded with salt and on their way home, while in what is now the Hicks pasture, they heard something that sounded like a turkey gobbler. One of them asked the other, "Did you hear that turkey?" the reply came, "Yes, but it was not a turkey." The Indians attacked them. They quit their horses and ran into a thicket. Sampson was wounded and one Indian was killed, but was carried away by his men. Years later an Indian skeleton was found with bow and arrow by Bill Graves in a cave some distance from this battleground, but in the direction in which the Indians had retreated. Billie Cole walked to what is now known as the McLaughlin place, now owned by M.E. Millican, and returned in a wagon that night for his wounded brother. The salt had been poured out by the Indians and they had taken all the horses, saddles and sacks. The Coles settled the McLaughlin place. Billie was a bachelor and lived with Sampson, who had a family."

Savages Attack Sampson and Billy Cole

During
1864, Sampson and Billy Cole were returning from the Swenson and Swisher salt works, which were about eight miles west of Lometa in Lampasas County. They lived ten miles southeast of San Saba. Each of the boys was riding a pony and leading a pack horse loaded with salt. After they crossed the Colorado River and had gone about four miles, the two were attacked by five Indians and a bitter fight followed. Sampson Cole was wounded. They reported one Indian killed. Billy Cole took his brother into the thick brush, but the savages captured their horses. The Indians emptied the salt on the ground and carried the sacks away. Uncle Dick Kolb stated that the cattle licked the salt at this place so long, two sink holes were started that can still be seen.

Billy Cole went after a wagon and hauled his brother home. Many years after this fight an Indian grave was found about one mile from the battlefield, directly on the trail the Indians followed when they went away.

Note: Author personally interviewed: R. Kolb, who was living in that section at the time.

The above story is from the book,
The West Texas Frontier, by Joseph Carroll McConnell.

Historical and Biographical Record of Los Angeles and Vicinity, J.M. Guinn, published in Chicago by Champman Publishing Co., 1901, p. 685 states:

"...that when Sampson's son George was 12 (1839), the family moved to Carroll Co., AR. After a short time there, they moved to "the Cherokee nation, near the Grand river. Here the father bored salt wells under contract for the Indians, and among others bored for the famous 'Grand Saline' well." The family then moved to Jasper Co., MO, where they stayed for several years. They then went to an area on the Colorado River, 35 miles south of Austin, TX. This source also states that Sampson's son George was b. in Bureau Co., IL."

Los Angeles City and County Directory, 1872: Sampson & George W. listed as among first settlers in Gallatin Precinct.
