Fort Madison Democrat, Fort Madison, Iowa, August 31, 1892, page 10 and New Orleans Times-Democrat of the 28th.:
At Hammond, Louisiana, on Saturday, August 27, 1892, at 12:45 o'clock a.m., Mrs. Mary Sawtelle, aged seventy-four years and ten months.
Mrs. Sawtelle was a daughter of the late Judge Whittaker, a former resident who was regarded as a local patriarch. During his declining years Mrs. Sawtelle gave him her care and constant attention. Since his death she lived alone on Front Street until stricken with illness when, only a few months ago, her daughter, Mrs. J.B. Muncy, of Hammond, Louisiana, came to her and took her south. It was hoped that the change might benefit her; but the feebleness of age was not to be lessened by a new climate and new surroundings, so death came to relieve a weary soul of earthly cares.
Mrs. Sawtelle was well known to many Fort Madisonians and her face was ever among those that grace the "Golden Circle" on reunion days of Old Settlers.
She leaves two daughters, a Mrs. Hays of this county and Mrs. Muncy, of Hammond, Louisiana.
