Parents - James Wilson and Mary Fickel. We have began to compile our Wilson research in Ohio as we attempt to locate and identify James Wilson and which family he belonged to. Mary Fickel was born and raised in Perry County, Ohio and was there in 1850. In 1851, her family moved to Putnam County. We believe Joshua was born in August 1851, probably in Putnam County. As research shows, Perry County was formed from part of Fairfield County. The Fickel family originally settled in Fairfield County early. Wilson families helped populate both Fairfield and Perry Counties. We are heavily researching both of these counties. We are also researching Putnam County where Mary's family moved. And we are also researching Hancock County, where many of our other family lines went from Fairfield County. We will share with everyone what we find. And we will be updating often as we complete more research and create web pages for it. So if you are interested, please bookmark and keep checking with us!

Joshua Wilson is another one of my ancestors who has a questionable birthyear. His death certificate, shown below, has his birthyear as 1850. The census ages vary. However, the 1900 census (below) shows his birthdate as August 1851 as does the Wilson Family Bible. That is the date we have gone with on his family history page.
Note: Added October 2005 - We have added photos of Joshua and Ada's tombstone at Farimount Cemetery in Denver, Denver County, Colorado. Please note that this shows Joshua's birthyear as 1852 which matches the 1860 census.

County, Colorado. Stone faces east. Lots 6 and 7, Block 21, Lot 180, NW 1/4 Purchased by Ada Wilson at time of Joshua's death in March 1922. Note: Buried in Lot 8 is Carrie M. Wilson who died 8 May 1921. Lot was purchased at time of need by her son, Clinton Dewitt Wilson. This lot sits at the base of Lots 6 and 7 and runs north to south, rather than west to east. |
I believe he was born in Putnam County as that is where his mother's family was living at the time. In 1850, they were in Perry County, Ohio, but county historical records show they were Putnam County in 1851. And also it was in Putnam County that his mother remarried in 1857. See Mary Fickel's Homepage for more information on the Madden family.
Joshua started working on the Madden family farm (his step-father and mother) and continued farming until sometime between 1900 and 1910, when they moved into the town of Gordon, Nebraska and Joshua worked as a carpenter. He was still working as a carpenter when he died in 1922.
Finding Joshua in the various census turned out to be quite a chore. As you will see, he was mis-recorded in several of them.
