August 1, 2000 - The Riverton Ranger

IRVINE - Duane K. Irvine

Lifelong Lander area resident Duane K. Irvine died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Lander Valley Medical Center, ending his battle with cancer. He was 60 years old.

Services are Friday, Aug 4 at 10 a.m. from the United Methodist Church of Lander, with the Rev. Tom Lane officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander.

Duane Kenneth Irvine was born the son of Kenneth "Tex" and Edna Jean (Hornecker) Irvine on June 23, 1940, in Lander.

He worked at the Lander Creamery as a youth and was a 1958 graduate of Fremont County Vocational High School in Lander.

Following high school, Duane worked for a time for the Wyoming Highway Department. He was a finish blade operator and worked for Gulf Minerals, Brasel and Sims Construction Company and Gilpatrick Construction and for the Murray Brothers at the Big Eagle Mine in the Gas Hills. He was operator for the Rissler-McMurray Construction Company at the time of his death.

Duane K. Irvine married the former Edna Louise Brannan at May Bell, Colo., on Dec 16, 1972.

His addition to his wife, Louise, Mr. Irvine is survived by three children, Lonnie, Aaron and Dale Irvine; his mother, Jean Irvine, one brother, Dudley Irvine and his wife Pat, all of Lander; and sister Polly Olson and her husband, Terry, of Riverton.

Duane Irvine is described by his family as an ardent outdoorsman. They say he enjoyed hunting and fishing, tending his small herd of cows, and training a horse he won in a raffle. He enjoyed travel "to see just what was on the other side of the hill."

He was a member of the BPO Elks Lodge 2317, the Don Stough Post 33 of the American Legion, and the United Methodist Church, all of Lander.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Little Wind Hospice Building Fund in care of Hudson's Funeral Home, 680 Mount Hope Drive, Lander, 82520, which has charge of arrangements.

NORSE - Julia Norse

Services for Julia (Brown) Norse of rural Riverton are Friday, Aug 4 at 10 a.m. from St. Stephens Catholic Church south of Riverton.

Rosaries are Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. from the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton and 7:30 p.m. Thursday from the family home at 795 17-Mile Road, with a wake to follow.

Julia Norse died in Lander on Sunday, July 30, 2000, at the age of 62.

She was born in Ethete on Jan 17, 1938, the daughter of Andrew L. Brown Sr. and Alta (Tyler) Brown.

She attended Mill Creek School in Ethete, St. Stephens School and St. Labre School in Ashland, Mont.

She married Edwin Martin Norse on March 7, 1960 at St. Stephens. Mrs. Norse had lived on the Wind River Indian Reservation all of her life.

Mrs. Norse was a retired Arapaho culture teacher.

A member of the Catholic faith, she attended both the Native American Church and Catholic mass.

She was a member of the community pow wow committee, a Gold Star Sister, and a member of the Arthur-Antelope-Brown Post 84 American Legion Auxiliary.

Mrs. Norse enjoyed attending pow wows, beading, playing bingo, playing handgames, and spending time with her grandchildren and other family members.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin Martin Norse, sons Wayne J. Norse Sr. of Woodland, Wash., Dominic Dawayne Norse of Arapahoe, Mathew J Norse of Arapahoe, Leo Headley Jr. of Riverton, Stephen G. Headly Sr. of Billings, Mont., Forrest J. Headley of Arapahoe, and Wallace Oldman Sr. of Arapahoe; daughters Carol E Norse, Carolyn J. Norse, Lori A Spoonhunter and Mary K Underwood, all of Arapahoe; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; brothers Andrew Brown II, John Lee Tyler, Steve Charging Eagle, sisters Mary E Bear, Arlene Tyler and Ramona Cesspooch.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Alta Brown; sisters Rosaline Headley, Eva C'Hair, Annie Wanstall, Theresa Brown, Lavina Brown and Mary Blackburn; brothers John L. Brown, Raymond Brown, Gabriel Brown and Clarence J Tyler and an uncle Henry Lee Tyler.

Services are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton

CHINGMAN - Ernest F. Chingman Jr.

Ernest Chingman Jr., age 63, died Friday, July 28, 2000 in Englewood, Colo.

Traditional Indian funeral services will be Thursday, Aug 3 at 10 a.m. at Rocky Mountain Hall at Fort Washakie.

Interment will be at the Sacajawea Cemetery.

A rosary will be held Wednesday, Aug 2 at 7 p.m. at the family residence 279 Old Wind River Highway, Fort Washakie, with a wake to follow.

Ernest Frank Chingman, Jr was born March 10, 1937, at Fort Washakie and grew up on the Wind River Indian Reservation. He attended schools at Wind River and Fremont County Vocational High School in Lander.

He joined the U.S. Navy in April 1955 and served four years, until 1959.

Ernest F. Chingman Jr. married Vivian Groesbeck in 1960.

He worked for the Wyoming Highway Department in Cheyenne was a rock crusher operator and oiler, for Louisiana-Pacific at the saw mill in Dubois in the early '60s, and as a heavy equipment operator, bartender and driller in the oil fields for 24 years.

His family says he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, playing pool and rodeos.

Survivors include his ex-wife, Vivian Chingman of Ethete; mother Florence Rose Chingman of Fort Washakie; sisters Phyllis Tropser of Fort Washakie and Janis Sage of Ethete; brothers Charles Chingman of Santa Barbara, Calif, and Gary and Bob Chingman of Fort Washakie;daughters, Reva Hill of Fort Washakie, Gladys Wallowingbull and Ardena Spoonhunter of Ethete; sons Arlen Chingman, Marvin Magnum and Brian Groesbeck of Thete; seven grandchildren, numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Chingman; sons Dean Jason Chingman and Chester Duane Oldman; brother John Chingman; and grandparents Jake and Gladys Behan.

Services are by Wind Dancer of Fort Washakie.

BAKER - Katrina Y. Baker

Former Arapaho Pow Wow Queen Katrina Y. Baker, also known as Tina Shangin, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage from Lupus-related health problems. She was 37 years old.

Services were Saturday morning, July 29, at Evergreen Memorial Chapel in Anchorage. A dinner followed, with Native American food, at Central Lutheran Church in Anchorage.

Burial was Monday, July 31 at 2 p.m. at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery, near her sister, Sharon M. Carlson.

Tina was born April 5, 1963, in Douglas. She lived in Riverton and Douglas, and while she was still very young, moved to Alaska with her family. She lived in Alaska, where her father taught at AVTEC in Seward, and in Washington, where her family owned a home. After graduation from high school in Seward, she attended AVTEC. In 1991, she left Alaska, then returned to Anchorage in April of this year.

She was a homemaker who also enjoyed drawing, art and ceramics. She was a traditional Indian dancer and had been a pow wow queen at Araphoe. She attended the Russian Orthodox Church.

Her son, John, says, "My mom was a very strong person and she tried her best to make others happy, even when she wasn't well."

Ms. Baker was preceded in death by her mother, Jane (Friday) Baker; father John H. Baker, and a sister, Sharon M. Carlson.

Katrina Y. Baker is survived by her sons, John Clemens Shangin and Gordon Edward Shangin Jr. of Kelso, Wash; brother John Leroy Baker III of Kelso; sisters Chalice "Pat" Quiver Shangin and Alvina "Auvie" Craig of Anchorage and Sarah Littleshield and Phillis "Penny" Robertson of Arapahoe; and the father of her children, George E. Shangin of Seattle.

THORPE - Margaret "Peggy"

Margaret Lynn "Peggy" Thorpe of Riverton died Thursday, July 27, 2000 at Riverton Memorial Hospital. She was 39 years old.

Memorial services will be held at a later date from the Calvary Baptist Church in Riverton.

Margaret Lynn Moe was born March 12, 1961, in Moorehead, Minn., the daughter of Richard George Moe and Kathleen Ann (Olson) Moe. She attended Burroughs and Mesquite high schools in Ridgecrest, Calif. Peggy moved to Riverton, from Ridgecrest, 12 years ago.

She married Elzie Keith Thorpe on April 13, 1999 in Riverton.

Peggy Thorpe was a member of the Lutheran faith. Her family says "She was a 'put others before yourself' type of person, and she lived by that with her family and friends throughout her life."

Survivors include her husband, Elzie Keith Thorpe of Riverton; son, James R. Herrera of Riverton; daughters Aleisa L. Bebee of Ridgecrest, Cayla M. Herrera, Kathleen R Herrera and Dreama N. Thorpe, all of Riverton; her parents, Richard and Kathleen Moe; and sisters Cynthia Moore of Spokane, Wash., and Lydia Kravita of Valencia, Calif.

Services are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton.

Services for Glen Moffatt of Lander are Friday, Aug 4 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Mount Hope, Hudson's Funeral Home of Lander. Mr. Moffatt died at the Lander Valley Medical Center on Monday, July 31, 2000. He was 88 years old.

August 2, 2000 - Riverton Ranger

MOFFATT - Glen H. "Sam" Moffatt

Services for longtime Lander-area resident Glen H. "Sam" Moffatt are Friday, Aug 4 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Mount Hope, Hudson's Funeral Home of Lander. The Rev. Tom Lane officiates.

Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander.

Mr. Moffatt died early Monday morning, July 31, 2000 at the Lander Valley Medical Center. He was 88 years old.

Glen Handbury "Sam" Moffatt was born Jan 5 1912 at Neola, Iowa, the son of Edward and Bertha (Handbury) Moffatt. He was a 1931 graduate of Neola High School.

Glen was working for the Petersen Trucking Company at Pinedale when he met Elizabeth Thompson Smail. He and Bea returned to Neola and were married Nov 10, 1937. The couple worked the family farm in Iowa for 20 years.

The family moved to Lander in 1957, and Glen worked as a policeman for four years and managed the Lander city parks until his employment with U.S. Steel at the Atlantic City ore mine in 1963.

After his retirement in 1978, Glen and Bea enjoyed traveling.

He was a member of the BPO Elks Lodge 2317 of Lander and the United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, Bea of Lander, he is survived by a daughter, Jeanie Penner of Denver, a son Bill Moffatt, and his wife Chris of Green River; one sister, Ireme Thomas of Elkhorn, Iowa; brother Jack Moffatt and his wife Clem, and a sister-in-law Helen Moffatt, all of Neola; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brothers.

Arrangements are by Hudson's Funeral Home of Lander.

WARNING - Mary Margaret Warning

Mary Margaret "Kelly" Warning, mother of John Michael Warning of Lander, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, in Pocatello, Idaho, following a lengthy illness. She was 77 years old.

Mary Margaret Kelly was born June 17, 1923, in American Falls, Idaho, the daughter of Michael and Mamie (Sullivan) Kelly, both from Ireland.

She married Victor J. Warning on Dec 18, 1942, in Oakland, Calif, and they were married 57 years.

She was a housewife and homemaker, and her family says she loved gardening, sewing, antique collecting and trading, and interior decorating.

She was a member of the Catholic faith.

Mrs. Warning is survived by her husband, Vic; one son, John Michael Warning and his wife Tricia of Lander; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

HENDRY - Mary Helen Hendry

Services for Mary Helen Hendry, 76, of Casper are 2 p.m. Monday, Aug 7 at Memorial Chapel in Casper, with the Rev Bill Moore of First United Methodist Church officiating.

Cremation has taken place, and her ashes will be spread alongside her husband's on the family ranch, Clear Creek Cattle Company.

She died Monday, July 31, 2000 in Casper, after a brief bout with cancer.

Mary Helen Cheatham was born Feb 17, 1924 in Burnett, Texas, the daughter of John and Margaret (Hibler) Cheatham. She grew up in Texas until the family moved to Craig, Colo., where she was graduated from high school in 1943. They moved to Casper in 1948, when her father was transferred to work at the Texaco refinery.

She married James D. Hendry in Casper on October 18, 1950. He preceded her in death on Dec 6, 1998.

Mary Helen Hendry was a woman with many interests and hobbies, the family notes.

She wrote articles for the Casper Star-Tribune about ranch life and people she met in the Lost Cabin-Lysite community. These stories were later published in a book, Tales of Old Lost Cabin. She also wrote two other books, "Petticoats and Pistols" and "Indian Rock Art in Wyoming."

She was also interested in art, painting several pictures and experimenting with various raw materials to turn into pictures.

She received a master of fine arts degree from the University of Wyoming in 1972.

Mary Helen Hendry was instrumental in starting the Nicolayson Art Museum.

She served on the school board in Arminto until consolidation. She was elected to her first term on the Natrona County School Board in the middle '70s. She served until 1982. She was re-elected in 1992 and served until her death. Her family says that education of children was very important to her.

She was a member of the Natrona County CowBelles, Wyoming CattleWomen, Natrona County Republican Women, Casper Artist Guild and the Wyoming School Boards Assocation.

Survivors include one son, Robert Hendry and his wife of Lost Cabin; two grandchildren, J.W. and Jarrod; and one brother, John Cheatham Jr. of California.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

HARRIS - Bernie Harris

Services for Bernie Harris of Riverton are Saturday, Aug 12 at 10 a.m. from St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Riverton. The Rev. Bill Espenshade officiates. Interment follows at Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton.

A rosary is Friday at 7 p.m. from St. Margaret's Catholic Church.

Bernie Harris died at his home in Riverton Wednesday morning, Aug 9, 2000. He was 80 years old.

Bernard Octave Harris was born Sept 20, 1919 in Olive, Mont, the son of James Lester Harris and Edna Sarah (Hanley) Harris. He was a graduate of Natrona County High School in Casper.

Mr. Harris was a veteran of World War II. Bernie Harris lived in Big Timer, Mont., and Twin Falls, Idaho, before coming to Riverton 48 years ago.

He married the former Lovena Randolph on Aug 25, 1956, in Kemmerer.

He was a longtim bar and restaurant manager in Riverton.

Mr. Harris was a member of the CAtholic faith, served on St. Margaret's Financial Committee, Parish Council and was selected as St. Margaret's Man of the Year.

He had b een a member of the Riverton District 25 Recreation Board, Riverton School District 25 Board and was involved with Riverton Little League baseball, Riverton Babe Ruth baseball, and American Legion/Lions baseball in Riverton.

Bernie Harris was a member of the KNights of Columbus, BPO Elks Lodge 1693, Eagles Lodge and the American Legion.

His hobbies included golf, softball, officiating at athletic events and following his children and grandchildren in their sports activies.

He is survived by his wife, Lovena Harris of the family home; sons Mike Harris and Pat Harris of Riverton; daughters, Jan Harris Penrose, Colo, Jacque Harris of Riverton and Tammy Leisy of Gillette; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and an infant daughter.

Memorials may be made to St. Margaret's Catholic School of Riverton.

TOMSIC -Mildred G. Tomsic

Graveside services and interment for Mildred G. Tomsic are Friday, Aug 11 at 1 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton. The Rev. William Espenshade of St. Margaret's Catholic Church of Riverton officiates.

Mildred Tomsic died Sunday, Aug 6, 2000 at Michael Manor in Douglas. She was 90 years old.

She was born Dec 3, 1909, in Verdel, Neb., the daughter of Edward C. and Albena (Janecck) Hubenka. She grew up and was educated in Verdel.

Mildred married Joseph Tomsic in San francisco.

She worked in the shipyards in Seattle and San Francisco during World War II. The family lived in San Francisco, Riverton, Arizona and Douglas at various times.

Her family says Mildred loved walking, cooking and her grandsons.

She is survived by two sisters, Lillian and Vivian, both of Riverton; two grandsons, Ian McMackin of Fort Collins, Colo., and Jason McMackin of Douglas; and one great granddaughter, Ashlyn McMackin of Douglas.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and daughter Joanna May McMackin on June 19, 1999.

Converse Funeral Chapel of Douglas is in charge of arrangements.

FANNING - Nellie H. Fanning

Nellie H. Fanning, age 96, died Tuesday Aug 8, 2000 in Rapid City, S.D.

Family graveside services are Tuesday, Aug 15 at 1 p.m. in Laramie.

Nellie was born in Pleasantview, Mo., on Aug 5, 1904, the daughter of Frank M. and Mary Eleanor (Lindsay) Hackleman. She married James Fanning on Feb 1, 1932 and lived in Laramie until moving to Riverton.

Mrs. Fanning moved to Riverton in June 1980 and lived at Sertoma Housing until June of this year.

She is survived by her older brother, E. F. "Gene" Hackleman of Riverton; a sister, Mary Terriere and nephew Phil Terriere of Casper; a great niece, Jo Hehr of Riverton; and many other nephews, nieces and their families.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Lillian Kinne, and niece Linda Kinne, also longtime Riverton residents; two brothers, Ted and Russell Hackleman; and a sister, Eva Norman.

HERRERA - Zachary David Herrera

Services for Zachary David Herrera, age 19, are Tuesday, Aug 15 at 10 a.m. from the Lander Community center.

Zachary, son of Trididad and Cindy Herrera, died Friday, Aug 11, 2000 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Zac was born June 13, 1981 in Buffalo.

Zac, diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 2 1/2, participated in sports including soccer, baseball, football, wrestling, track and ice hockey. His family says he enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. He was involved in buckskinning and participated in mountain man rendezvous throughout the western United States. Every summer since the age of 7, Zac attended diabetic camp at Camp Hope on Casper Mountain.

Zac attended North Elementary, Starrett Junior High and was a 2000 graduate of Lander Valley High School. Excelling in music, Zac received a vocal scholarhip to attend Central Wyoming College in Riverton this fall.

Zac is survived by his parents, grandparents Jackie and Wiley Olson and sister Emily and Quentin Witzel of Lander.

He is preceded in death by paternal grandparents Ted and Ramona Herrera.

HEIL - Frances L. Heil

Services for Frances L. Heil will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug 14 at Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton.

Mrs. Heil died Friday, Aug 11, 2000, after an extended hospital stay.

Mrs. Heil was a native of Riverton and had extensive family ties throughout the country.

She is survived by her husband, Harry Heil; her son and daughter-in-law, Al and Barbara Peterson, of Benton, La.; her step-children Julie and Fred Perrett of Riverton, Jim Heil and Tom Heil of Colorado Springs, Colo; Pat and Allan Robertson of Lander, Leota Alexander of Dallas; grandchildren Deborah and Kerry Mitchell, Sean and Elizabeth Peterson, Derrick Heil, Tommy Heil, Sonya Heil, Sean Robertson, Bill Robertson; four great grandchildren and numerous other family members.

Former Riverton resident Aletha Lynn Werner died Wednesday Aug 2, 2000 in Tucson University Medical Center, due to leukemia. She was 39 years old.

Memorial services were Sunday, Aug 6 at Palm Mortuary in Las Vegas.

Alethea Lynn Renteria was born Aug 8, 1950, the daughter of Iva Ruth (Leavitt) and Phillips Renteria.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Werner of Las Vegas; two daughters, Julie Steward of Cucamonga, Calif, and Bonnie Werner of Fontana, Calif.; two sons, Richard Norton and Vince Norton, both of Ocala, Fla; five grandchildren; three sisters, Delores Thomas, Irene (Renteria) Barkman and Francis Thompson; four brothers, Richard Happy, Charles Des Enfants, Rodrick Des Enfants and Ray Lowry.

Sharon Snyder, age 35, died Thursday, Aug 3, 2000 at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City from complications following surgery. Services were Aug 9.

HUNTER - Bonnie B. Hunter

Graveside services for Bonnie B. Hunter were Monday, Aug 14, at 10 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton. The Rev. Bob Eldan officiated.

Mrs. Hunter died Wednesday Aug 9, 2000 at Westward Heights Care Center in Lander. She was 97 years old.

Born Oct 14, 1902 in Cordell, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Franklin and Alberta (Wilbur) Bonham.

She grew up the daughter of a minister, who moved the family from place to place. She attended Central College in Kansas before her marriage to Ted Hunter, Sr., in 1924.

The Hunters moved to Gebo, Wyo, where they had a sheep ranch. While living in Gebo, their son, Ted "Tinker" Hunter Jr. was born. They later moved to Thermopolis where they owned a motel and spa. Several years later they settled in Fort Washakie, where they owned and operated Hunter's Trading Post and cattle ranch.

Mrs. Hunter was a housewife and writer. She was a member of the Methodist faith.

After her husband's death, Bonnie Hunter moved to Thermopolis, where she enjoyed writing articles for the Northern Wyoming Daily news in Worland.

In her free time, Mrs. Hunter played the piano, sang and cooked and baked for large groups of people. She expressed great pleasure in writing. Her first published articles appeared in several McCall's magazines in the 1930s.

Survivors include three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Franklin and Alberta Bonham; sisters Abby Secord, Lois Chavez and Grace Confer; a brother, Lauren Bonham; her husband, Ted Hunter Sr., and son Ted "Tinker" Hunter Jr.

Mrs. White, 83 died Sunday Aug 13, 2000 in Riverton.

Purcie Curtis was born Dec 31, 1916 in Declo, Idaho to Minnie and George W. Curtis. She married Charles J. (Johns) White in Provo in 1934. The Whites moved to Lander in 1963, later to Hudson and to Riverton in 1980.

Penney White worked as a senior companion for five years and made many friends in that capacity, her family said. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Penney White is survived by a son, Charles J. White of Lander; a daughter, Clara Noretta "Rita" Caine of Riverton; eight grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren; and two sisters, Vernice Mayer and Grace Curtis, both of Kanab, Utah.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Carol Deen Williams Parker; grandsons Carl Wayne Williams and Jeremy Williams, granddaughter Natalie Williams, brothers Merlin Curtis and George Curtis, sisters Emma Lyle Curtis, Annie Davis, Clara Conder and Alene Doner, and her parents.

Services for Lorna Witzel are Friday, Aug 18 at 10 a.m. from the First Baptist Church of Riverton. The Rev. Gordon Penfold officiates, and burial is at Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton.

Mrs. Witzel died Tuesday, Aug 15, 2000 at Riverton Memorial Hospital. She was 78 years old. Born in Sheridan on Feb 8, 1922, she was the daughter of John and Barbara Schedlock.

On Nov 10, 1946 she married Elmer Witzel of Rapelje, Mont. They moved to Riverton in 1971.

Her family says she loved to cook, sew and decorate cakes.

Lorna Witzel was the mother of two, Alvin Witzel and Linda Davis, and had 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchilren, three stepgrandchildren and four step great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her husband, Elmer Witzel; and two sisters, Amy Coffin of Montana and Wilma Meyer of Albuquerque, NM.

She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, George Schedlock, Audro Schedlock, Julia Schedlock, Elizabeth Veilos, John Schedlock Jr, Earl Schedlock, Ed Schedlock, Rose Wilkins and Roy Schedlock and her parents John and Barbara Schedlock.

CLARK - William David Clark Jr.

William David Clark Jr, age 45, of Glenrock died of cancer Tuesday Aug 8, 2000.

Cremation took place and graveside services were held Wednesday Aug 9 at the Glenrock Cemetery.

Known to his family and friends as "Pete", William David Clark Jr. was born May 21, 1955, the son of William D. and Phyllis Clark in Jackson. Pete grew up and attended the Jackson-Wilson schools. He was an avid outdoorsman. Pete outfitted in the Fall Creek and Goosewing areas of Jackson for hunting, fishing and pack trips.

Pete married Laurie Duran in 1976. A son, Rocky Dale Clark, was born on June 10, 1977. In 1984, Pete married Nanci Haubert, and a daughter, Katherine Victoria Clark, was born on April 23, 1985.

In 1983, Pete went to Mesquite, Nev., where he was employed as a security guard for the Virgin Rivers Casino and where he het his fiance and companion of four years, Tammi Zerkle and daughters Chanda and Tessa. They moved to Glenrock in August 1996, where Pete was employed by 71 Construction Co. of Casper.

Pete is survived by his companion, Tammi Zerkle and daughters Chanda and Tessa; his parents, Wm. D. and Phyllis Clark, all of Glenrock; children Rocky Clark of Santa Rosa Calif, Katie Clark of Jackson; sisters Donis Weaver of Glenrock, Rhonda Panzer of Rock Springs, Roberta Lowe of Riverton, Linda Hammer of Driggs, Idaho, and Carroll Stradley of Jackson; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a host of friends.

Sharon Snyder, age 35, died Thursday, Aug 3, 2000 at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City from complications following surgery.

Services were Wednesday, Aug 9 at 2 p.m. from the Shoshone Episcopal Mission at Fort Washakie, with the Rev Tom Means officiating.

Interment was on the Snyder Ranch, South Fork Road, Fort Washakie.

A prayer service was Tuesday, Aug 8 at 7 p.m. at the family residence at 455 North Fork Road, Fort Washakie, with a wake following.

Sharon Marie Snyder was born June 25, 1956, in Lander, the daughter of Samuel and Belverda Snyder. She attended schools in Fort Washakie and was graduated from Lander Valley High School in 1983. She graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1990, with a degree in education.

Sharon taught at the Fort Washakie Head Start and Fort Washakie School before opening the Over the Rainbow Child Care Center in Fort Washakie.

Her family points out that Sharon had a great love for children and "did anything to help out." The family adds that she enjoyed going to pow wows, doing things with her family, the outdoors and beadwork.

Survivors include her parents, Belverda and Samuel Snyder of Fort Washakie; daughter Tara Snyder of Fort Washakie; sisters Susan and Latonna Snyder of Fort Washakie; brothers David "Grundy" Snyder and his wife Tammy, of Fort Washakie; nephews Justin Brent Cordel and Dakotah Snyder, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Samuel Snyder Jr; grandparents Ben and Nancy Snyder and John Meyers and Lucy St. Clair.

MEDINA - Adolph C. Medina Jr.

Adolph C. Medina Jr. of Rawlins died Sunday, Aug 13, 2000 following a brief illness.

He was 76 years old.

Funeral mass is Thursday, Aug 17 at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rawlins.

Rosary is at 7 p.m. Wednesday from St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Visitation is Wednesday from 1 to 6 p.m. from Rostad Mortuary in Rawlins.

Adolph C. Medina Jr. was born July 16, 1925, in Raton, NM the son of Adolpho Medina Sr and Candelaria (Apodaca) Medina. He married Mary Lucy Espinoza on Oct 6 1945. In 1947, they made Rawlins their permanent home.

Mr. Medina was a service station operator and mechanic as well as a bus operator for Colorado Interstate Gas.

He served as president of St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Bishop's Pastoral Council, the AARP board, the Child Development Board and the State Minority Commission. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, member of the Latin American Club, Toastmasters, Lions Club and Eagles.

His interests included music and dancing.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy; three sons and their wives, Tim and Jan Medina of Washington, D.C., James and Vicki Medina of Cheyenne, Daniel and Tatyana Medina of Rock Springs, four daughters and their husbands, Carmen and Charles Mills of Capser, Beverly and Tom Hite of Hanna, Dora and Bill Flagg of Riverton and Patty and Mike Bonnette of Rawlins; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his three brothers, his sister and by one son, Paul.

Cheri L. Dunning, 53, of Two Harbors, Minn., died Saturday Aug 12, 2000 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minn.

Cheri L. Brill was born in Billings, Mont., on June 21, 1947, the daughter of Adam and Esther (Lohrenz) Brill. She attended school in Frannie and was graduated from high school in Riverton.

She raised three children in Wyoming and worked as the director of Housing and Urban Development in Uinta County and grants manager for the University of Nevada in Reno. Most recently she was adminstrative assistant for Superior USA in Duluth.

She married Robert Dunning in 1988 in Reno. She moved to Two Harbors in June 1995.

She was preceded in death by her father, Adam, and sister, Vicki.

She is survived by her husband, Robert, of Two Harbors; sons Erie Rossman and his wife Michelle of Cheyenne, and Isaiah Henson and Kathy Wagner of Two Harbors; daughter Diahn Martins and her husband Marco of Colorado Springs, Colo; her mother, Esther of Riverton; sister Adrene Wuertley and husband Robert of Bairoil; granddaughter Katie Martins; and nephews Jay and Adam Wuertley.

Frances Olive Ferguson was born in Minatare, Neb., on July 10, 1910, the daughter of Courtland Blane Ferguson and Laura May (Learned) Ferguson.

She married Hawley G. Hovander on Nov 23, 1930, in Gering, Neb. He preceded her in death in 1978.

The family came to Riverton in February 1947 from Glendive, Mont.

Mrs. Hovander was a homemaker. She was a past member of the Christian Women's Society. Mrs. Hovander was a member of the Riverton Christian Church.

Her family says she was very proud of her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, church and reading.

Survivors include sons Dean Hovander of Riverton, Dale Hovander of Riverton and Steve Hovander of Green River; a daughter, Dorothy Jean French of Cleveland, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth of Deming, N.M. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hovander was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and three grandchildren.

Juanita H. 'Nita' Stewart of Shoshoni died Saturday, Aug 19, 2000 at Riverton Memorial Hospital. She was 79 years old.

Juanita Heloise Johnson was born Feb 14, 1921, in Dotson, La., the daughter of William Henry Johnson and Omelia Jane Johnson.

She married Hoyt Benton Stewart on Sept 3, 1939, in Magnolia, Ark.

Mrs. Stewart was a housewife. They had lived in Shoshoni since 1970.

Mrs. Stewart was a member of the Mormon faith. She collected dolls, driftwood and rocks.

Survivors include her husband, Hoyt Benton Stewart of Shoshoni; a son, Ronald Earl Stewart of Rapid City, S.D.; a daughter, Bonnie Sue Walters of Franklin, G.; five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; sisters Elnora Furqueron of California, Ella Mae Longoria of Arkansas and Madelin Spiers of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Omelia and William Johnson, and two brothers, Ralph Johnson and Dutch Johnson.

TEAGUE - Cecil I. (Slagle) Teague

Services for Cecil I. Terague of Riverton are Monday, Aug 28 at 10 a.m. from the United Methodist Church of Riverton.

Mrs. Teague died Tuesday, Aug 22, 2000 at the age of 78.

Cecil I. Cloer was born to Bill and Rena Cloer on Aug 30, 1921, in Greeley, Colo. They moved to the Riverton area when she was 3 years old, where her father became the superintendent of farming at St. Stephen's Mission.

Her family says Cecil grew up with a love of the Wyoming outdoors, where she enjoyed summer and winter sports in the mountains of Wyoming.

Cecil had two brothers and one sister - Bill Cloer of Houston, Aleise Conley of Scottsdale, Ariz., and George Cloer, who died in military action in Italy during World War II.

She attended grade school at Arapahoe and was graduated from Riverton High School in 1939. During World war II, she worked at Hill Field in Utah. However, she returned to Riverton and married Kenneth Slagle Jr. in 1944.

Until Kenneth's death in 1977, they owned and operated Slagle Oil Co. in Riverton.

Cecil was an active member of Chapter AZ P.E.O., and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Kenneth and Cecil had one daughter, Linda Kilfoy, who lives in Scottsdale; three grandchildren, Darrick Brent "Rick" Kilfoy of Phoenix, Ariz., Gregory Trent Kilfoy of Houston, and Kristyn Nicole Ungerer of Denver; and one great granddaughter, Courtney Nichole Kilfoy.

In 1979, she married Herman S. Teague of Lander and became the stepmother of Cheri Newman of Sedora, Ariz., and Larry Teague of Seattle. They also survive.

TAYLOR - Vera M. Taylor

Vera M. Taylor of Lander died early Friday morning, Aug 25, 2000 at Westward Heights Care Center in Lander, following a lengthy illness. She was 86 years old.

Services are Tuesday, Aug 29 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Mount Hope, Hudson's Funeral Home in Lander. The Rev. Jim Urich of the Covenant Presbyterian Church officiates.

Vera Myrtle Goodenberg was born to William and Delilah (McKee) Goodenberg on June 10, 1914 in McDonald, Kan. She moved to the Fremont County area in 1948.

Vera Taylor taught school in Crowheart, the Gas Mills, Morton and worked as a secretary in the Riverton Junion High School. She lived in Dubois for 10 years, where she worked as a bookkeeper. She moved to Lander and worked for the Fremont County clerk until retirement in 1987.

After retirement, she was very active with the senior citizens center and was the state president of Wyoming AARP. She helped teach reading at the library for the adult literacy program. She was also active in the Covenant Presbyterian Church of Lander.

Vera Taylor is survived by her sons, Bill Taylor of Alko, Nev., and Alan Taylor and his wife Myllie of Spring Creek, Nev.; a brother, Bryon Goodenberg of California; sister Lucille Rider of Denver; step-sisters, Stella Case of Savanna, Ga., and Louis Roscoe of Seattle; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and several brothers and sisters.

Jacob Wempen died Friday, Aug 25, 2000 at the Casper Medical Center. He was 20 years old.

Jacob Travis Wempen was born Dec 27, 1979 in Lander , the son of Dale H. and Kebbie (Priebe) Wempen.

He lived all of his life in the Pavillion area, was a 1998 graduate of Wind River high School, attended Black Hills State University for one semester and Central Wyoming College for one semester.

He worked as a laborer with oil field tools.

He was a past member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. His family describes Jacob as "kind to everyone".

The family says he enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting and fishing, sports, in which he participated in football, basketball and softball; and being around his friends and family.

Survivors include his parents, Dale and Kebbie Wempen of Pavillion; grandfathers Duane Ditton of Riverton and John Wempen Jr., of Riverton; a close sister, Jennifer Wempen of Pavillion; an aunt, Kaylene Howard of Riverton, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

NEELY - Joe Neely

Funeral services for Joe Neely are Wednesday, Aug 30 at 10 a.m. from the First Baptist Church of Lander, with burial to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander. The Rev. Lawrence Kelly will officiate.

James Albert "Joe" Neely died at the Lander Valley Medical Center Saturday afternoon, Aug 26, 2000 at the age of 89.

He was born Jan 5, 1911, to James Henry and Annie Emaline (Baker) Neely in Wagner, Okla.

Mr. Neely came to Wyoming in 1931 in a Model A. Ford. He and his cousin came to the area to be cowboys and homesteaded 640 acres in the Pinedale area. Mr. Neely helped his brother, Bob, homestead another 40 acres shortly thereafter.

His first job in Pinedale was building fence. He ran a hay rake in the summertime. During the winter he trapped coyotes and badgers.

In 1940, Mr. Neely married Carma McCabe. He built her a log cabin, working until 1 a.m. or 2 a.m., then working all day in a Pinedale meat locker plant.

In 1950, he went to work for the Pinedale Water and Streets Department. In 1951, he started working as a police officer in Pinedale and was shortly thereafter appointed police chief, where he stayed until his retiement in 1976.

Joe Neely was very involved in community activities, especially those involving youth. He helped organize youth baseball in Pinedale, along with other youth activities.

He moved to Lander in 1982, where he spent his retirement years.

Mr. Neely is survived by his son, Steve Neely and his wife Fran of Saipan; brothers John Neely of Daniel, and Bucky Neely and his wife Lucy of Pinedale; sister Ray Travers of Littleton, Colo.; grandchildren Andrea, Joseph, Samuel and Travis; great-grandchildren Amber and Alyssa; and extended family Robert and Barbara Raynor and their children, Abby and Adam.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Jimmy Neely, and numerous brothers and sisters.

OLSON - Betty M. Olson

Services for Betty M. Olson, lifetime resident and Lander businesswoman, will be held at 10 a.m. this Friday, Sept 1, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Lander.

Betty Olson died Sunday, Aug 27, 2000, at the Sun Health Specialty Hospital in Thornton, Colo., a suburb of Denver, where she had been a patient for the past 15 months. She was 73 years old. Betty Marie Meredith was born March 3, 1927, at Milford, to Frank Sperry and Leah (Leseberg) Meredith. The family moved to Fort Washakie when Betty was about 4 years old, and she completed all the elementary grades at the Countryman School. She attended high school in Lander and was graduated from Fremont County Vocational High School in 1946. After graduation, she moved into Lander, where she lived with her grandmother and began working at the J.C. Penney store.

On July 14, 1950, she was married to Robert J. Olson, and the couple, with with partner Bill Young, started the Olson Dairy on Cliff Street. Betty helped with the deliveries and also raised three children during those years.

On Jan 1, 1963, Olson's Dairy sold out to Morning Star Dairy, which became Cream o' Weber. The dairy building was refurbished as a full-line grocery store and renamed Olson's Market.

After Bob's death in December 1992, Betty continued to operate the store, where she processed wild meat during hunting season and kept a candy counter for the children in the area. Her family says Betty adored the children who came for their daily treats, and the children looked to her as a grandmother or someone who really cared for them. The store was closed after Betty's health failed.

The family describes Betty as an outdoors-type person and says that as a young girl on the farm she helped with the animals and worked in the garden. She and Bob enjoyed camping.

Betty Olson was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Lander, St. Anne's Altar Society, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother, Henry, and a sister who died in infancy.

Survivors include two daughters, Cathy Suchey of Northglenn, Colo., and Cheryl Deichert and her husband, Willie, of Rapid City, S.D.; one son Rob Olson and his wife, Heidi, of Riverton, seven grandchildren, Wendy Suchey and David Suchey of Northglenn, Spencer Suchey and his wife, Misty, of Dallas, Matt and Chris Deichert of Rapid City, Bee and Courtney Olson of Riverton, and two great grandchildren; brothers Fritz, Frank Jr. and Bert Meredith, all of Lander; two sisters, Frances Dooley of Riverton and Elsie Freese of Lander; Uncle Roy Leseberg and Aunt Anna Scott, both of Lander, numerous nieces and nephews, their children, cousins and many friends.

Mrs. Hamilton died Monday evening, Aug 21, 2000, at Wind River Healthcare Center in Riverton. She was 78 years old.

Born in Curtis, Neb., on Dec 20, 1921, Dorothy was the daughter of Clyde Wesley Wood and Iona Blanch (Patterson) Good.

She moved to Riverton from Chugwater in 1938 and was a 1939 graduate of Riverton High School.

Dorothy married Orland Johnson in Riverton in 1941. He died in 1958. She married William Stanley Hamilton on March 1, 1967, in Reno, Nev.

Mrs. Hamilton was a housewife. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, and her family says she enjoyed reading and visiting with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Dorothy Jane Hamilton was a past president of the Eagles Auxiliary, 1 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Navy Mothers.

Survivors include her husband, Stan Hamilton; sons Orlande 'Skip' Johnson of Powell, Clyde Johnson of Riverton and Jerry Johnson of Riverton; step-sons Dan Hamilton of Custer, S.D. and Rob Hamilton of Green River; a step -daughter, Zandra Hamilton of Green River; eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Orland Johnson; two brothers, Carl Good and Alva Good; two sisters, Ione Johnson and Velma Fleenor; her parents and one great granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

The Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WATTS - Everett L. Watts

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug 30 at the Sheridan Cemetery for Riverton resident Everett L. Watts. The Methodist minister officiates.

Viewing was Tuesday from 9 to 11 a.m. from the Davis Funeral Home. Viewing in Sheridan is from the Ferries Funeral Home.

Mr. Watts died at Riverton Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Aug 27, 2000 at the age of 88.

He was born in Anacortes, Wash., July 29, 1912, the son of Cammie and Etta (Forman) Watts. He and his parents moved to Sheridan when he was a young boy, and he attended school there.

Everett married Florence Lucile Hublitz on May 2, 1939, in Hardin, Mont.

During World War II, Everett served in the U.S. Army for 2 1/2 years in the European theater. He was a 40-year member of the VFW Post 3628 of Riverton.

The couple lived in Sheridan until 1957, when they moved to Riverton. Everett was a truck driver and worked for Wind River Ready Mix for many years.

His family says he enjoyed camping and fishing. The couple went south in the winter, spending several winters in Nevada and Arizona.

He is survived by his wife, Florence, and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Local arrangements are by the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton.

SIMONS - Robert I. Simons

Capt. Robert I. Simons, (USN-Ret), died August 16, 2000 in Casper.

Services were held Aug 21 at St. Patricks Catholic Church, with burial in Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery, Casper.

Simons, 77, lived in Riverton for a number of years while working for Gulf Oil Co.

He was active in naval affairs, working with the commissioning of the USS Wyoming.

He is survived by his wife, Marie; daughters Susan M. Brandt of Kathmandu, Nepal, and Sally A Simons of Casper; one son, Thomas R. Simons of Casper; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren; as well as a brother and a sister.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater.

FISHER - John D. Fisher

Former Riverton resident John D. Fisher died at his home in Carson City, Nev., on Friday, Aug 25, 2000. He was 56 years old.

Memorial services are this Saturday, Sept 2 at 10 a.m. from the United Methodist Church of Riverton, 1116 W. Park.

Cremation has taken place.

John David Fisher was born in Boise, Idaho, on Jan 25, 1944, the son of Albert Fisher and Madonna (Emmack) Fisher. His family says he loved to travel and enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling.

Mr. Fisher was a meat cutter for Albertson's stores.

He had lived in Carson City since November 1998, moving there from Riverton.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Fisher of Carson City; son John David Fisher, Jr of Carson City; daughters Mary Ann Hester of El Paso, Texas and Amanda Marin Fisher of Carson City; brother James Lee Fisher of Riverton; sister Lou Weiss of Riverton; and five grandchildren.

John Fisher was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Fisher.

Capital City Cremation of Carson City is in charge of arrangements.

ALLISON - C. J. Allison

Clarence J. 'C.J.' Allison of Riverton died Monday, Aug 28, 2000, at Riverton Memorial Hospital. He was 55 years old.

Services are Friday, Sept 1 at 3 p.m. from the United Methodist Church of Riverton. The Rev. Earl Detwiler officiates, and cremation will follow. Committal rites will be by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Clarence Joseph Allison was born May 2, 1945, in Portland, Ore., the son of Kenneth Wayne Allison and Effie G. (Bell) Allison. The family moved to New Mexico in the '40s, and he was graduated from Espinola High School. He moved on to California and served 10 years in the military.

He married the former Ione Athena Pantazos on June 23, 1969, at the St. Vincent's Catholic Hospital Chapel in Santa Fe, N.M.

A retired military man who served as a staff sergeant-E6 in Vietnam, Allison worked as a ranch hand and lived in Missouri Valley north of Riverton. They came to the Riverton area in 1972.

Mr. Allison was a member of the 1838 Rendezvous Association, Wind River Flywheelers and life member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a past commander of the DAV and former Boy Scout leader.

Mr. Allison rebuilt the church in LaBarge and built a church altar.

His family says his interests included saddle making, black powder shooting, blacksmithing, horses, leather tooling, vehicle restoration, ranching and horse packing.

Survivors include his wife, Ione, of the family home; sons Jody of Riverton, Troy of Texas and Yancey of Rawlins; three grandchildren; his mother and step-father, Effie and Buck Boudenier of Espinolan, N.M.; and brothers Wayne, Jimmy, Jodel and Marlin, and sister Virginia, all of the Albuquerque area.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandfather.

The Davis Funeral Home of Riverton is in charge of arrangements.

SCHMIDT - Edmund F. Schmidt

Former Riverton resident Edmund F. Schmidt died Saturday, Aug 26, 2000 in Littleton, Colo., at the age of 95.

Services were Wednesday morning, Aug 30, from the Ascension Lutheran Church in Littleton. Burial followed at the Littleton Cemetery.

Edmund F. Schmidt was born in Akron, Colo., on April 29, 1905. He attended Washburn College and worked as an oil jobber.

He married Dorothy M. Smith on October 17, 1929, in Topeka, Kan. She preceded him in death.

Mr. Schmidt was president of the Riverton Lions Club, 1967-68, president of the Wyoming Oil Jobbers Assocation, 1968-69, and was a member of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod.

Survivors include daughters, Marilyn Lallement of Wichita, Kan., Joan Eberlein of Baltimore, Md., and Rita Kratzer of Littleton; a son, Edmund J. Schmidt of Cheyenne; 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Services were under the direction of the Drinkwine Mortuary, 999 W Littleton Blvd, Littleton, Colo., 80120.
