APPLEGATE - James Applegate

James Applegate died Saturday

Missoula, Mont. - James Applegate, 64, died in Missoula Community Hospital here on Feb 2, following a short illness.

He was born at Deer Lodge, Mont., Feb 27, 1915 to Andrew and Mattie (Zosel) Applegate.

He married the former Louise Swingley April 12, 1937 in Helena, Mont. He was a railroad engineer for the Milwaukee Railroad for 19 years and was a railroad engineer for the U.S. Steel operation at the Atlantic City ore mine for 15 years. He retired July 31, 1977.

While in Lander they made their home at 607 Market. Following his retirement they moved to Lolo, Mont.

He was a member of Wyoming Lodge No 2 AF-AM.

Survivors include his wife Louise; daughters, Phyllis Cowen of Lolo, Mont, Darlene Wilson of Lander, Jacqueline Freez of Bonner, Mont. and Kathy Majdic of Lander; sons, William and Kenneth of Gillette, Ronald , John and Lanny of Lander; a sister, Mrs. Wilma Bruns, Philipsburg, Mont., brothers William of Deer Lodge, Mont., and Herman of Drummon, Mont., and George of Santa Cruz, Calif; and 24 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hudson Funeral Home, with the Rev. David C. Donkle of the United Methodict Church officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery with Masonic graveside services.

Those wishing to may contribute to the Shriners Crippled Childrens Fund. Donations may be left or sent to Hudson's Funeral Home.

MOHR - Mrs. Dorothy Janet Mohr

Services were held in Lander Monday for Dorothy Janet Mohr, 79, who died Feb. 1 in Cheyenne.

She was born March 11, 1901 in Bowling Green, Ohio, to James and Minnie Constable.

She married Mike Mohr, December 24, 1937. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Garner of Cheyenne; two brothers, John and Jim Constable of Michigan; a sister Priscilla Uptegrove of Michigan; and four grandchildren.

Services were held at the Henry Mortuary with the Rev. William Cross of Trinity Episcopal Church officiating. Burial followed in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorials to the Popo Agie Senior Citizens would be appreciated by the family.

SLINKARD - Fount Slinkard

Former Lander resident Fount Slinkard, 74, of Hoquiam, Wash., died Sunday, Feb 3.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Slinkard, two children, Allen and Diane, and two grandchildren.

Also surviving him are four sisters, Cleva Latinia of Lander, Opal Miller of Casper, Hazel Smith of Clarksville, Tex., and Grace Nead of Sheridan, Mont., two brothers Carl Slinkard of Lander and Claude Slinkard of Hudson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are pending in Hoquiam.

STEVENS - Mrs. Glenn P. Stevens

Pioneer woman died

A Wyoming pioneer and longtime Lander resident, Glenn P. Stevens died Jan 15 in Vancouver, British Columbia following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Stevens was 62.

Funeral services were held in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory on Jan 21 at the Christ Church Cathedral and the officiant was Mrs. Steven's son-in-law, Father Stan Ver Straten, the Vicar of the Shoshone Episcopal Mission in Ft. Washakie.

Burial followed in Whitehorse Cemetery.

She was born on April 21, 1917 in Rock Springs, the daughter of Lon J. and Ada Poston. She moved to Lander in 1921 when her father bought the large Delfelder ranch, which was then known as the Poston Sheep Company until his retirement in 1959.

She attended Lander schools and graduated from Fremont County Vocational High School in 1933. She also attended Mills College and the University of Wyoming.

On October 19, 1940 she married Dr. Robert I. Bump, M.D. He died in 1947.

She married N. L. "Red" Stevens on Jan 20, 1951.

She was a member of the Episcopal Church and at the time of her death was still a member of Olivet Chapter No 3, Order of the Eastern Star in Lander.

She is survived by her husband, Red Stevens of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada; a daughter, Judy Ver Straten of Ft. Washakie; a son, Gary Stevens of Whitehorse; four grandchildren, Scott, Steve and Shauna Ver Straten of Ft. Washakie and Christopher Stevens of Whitehorse; and two sisters, Mrs. G. G. "Wanda" Brooder of Carefree, Ariz., and Mrs. L. A. "Ada" Crofts of San Diego, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Keith Poston and two brothers who died in infancy.

TWEED - Mrs. Mariam Tweed

Mariam Tweed, 73, died Tuesday

Murtl Mariam Tweed, 73, died Feb 5 at her home in Lander after a lengthy illness.

She was born March 27, 1906 in Sheridan to James Fenton Ewers and Dora (Guisinger) Ewers.

She attended grade school and high school in Basin and graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1927.

She taught school for one year at Fort Laramie and then taught school in Lander for 29 years.

She married Richard W. Tweed of Lander July 2, 1946. They started Tweed's Wholesale, Candy and Tobacco business in 1957. Later they were asked to be distributors for Budweiser beer in Fremont County. Richard preceded her in death in 1956.

Mariam continued to operate Tweed's Wholesale until she retired in 1978.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Daughters of the Nile, Beauceant, and PEO.

She is survived by a sister, Dora Clemons of Billings, Mont.; a sister-in-law, Lois Eweres (sic) of St. Stephens; a sister-in-law, Harriet Tweed of Casper; six nieces and three nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church with the Rev . David Donkle officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorials to the Mariam Tweed Scholarship fund would be appreciated by the family and may be left at the Henry Mortuary.

FERGUESON - Ethel Bell Fergueson

Ethel Bell Fergueson, 78, died Feb. 3, at Bishop Randall Hospital.

She was born Sept 22, 1902 in Lander to Mr. and Mrs. Dave Tweed.

She married Henry Clay Fergueson in Lander. He died in 1962.

Survivors include: sons, Harry Fergueson of Casper, David Fergueson and Andrew Fergueson of California, and John, Dunk and William all of Lander; daughters, Alma Hinrich of Lander, Ruth Lott of Casper and Elziabeth White of Mills; a sister, Nora Tweed of Lander; fifteen grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Henry Mortuary with the pastor Gus Scheuneman of the Seventh Day Adventist Church officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorials to the Seventh Day Adventist Church would be appreciated by the family.

ADDISON - Louis Addison

Louis Addison died

Louis S. Addison, 57, was found dead in the holding cell of the Ft. Washakie Jail at 8:20 a.m. Saturday during a routine jail check.

Addison had apparently hanged himself between 7:40 a.m. that morning and the time discovered by jailer Clyde Spoonhunter.

He hanged himself with a shirt remnant hooked to a door hinge, Deputy County Coroner Ed Hudson said. He was alone in the holding cell at the time.

He was a prominent resident of Ft. Washakie and was born there Oct 14, 1922 to Hiram and Ethel Addison.

He married the former Mary Hill, Jan 15, 1954 at Ft. Washakie.

He was a member of the entertainment committee from the time he was 18 years old until 1978. He took the part of Chief Washakie at the annual Gift of the Waters Pageant at Thermopolis. He was active for many years in the One-Shot Antelope Hunt pageantry. He was a veteran of World War II, and a member of the Richard Pogue Post of the American Legion.

His wife Mary died Oct 25, 1976.

Survivors include: stepchildren Milton Hill, Delores Coando, Mary Jane Velarde, Alice McGill, Sarah Aoah, Rose Friday and Dexter Aoah, all of Ft. Washakie, and Nelda Afraid-of-Hawk of Porcupine, S.D.; Orbana Cady of Dubois; Winona Genereaux, of Ft. DuChene, Utah; half sisters Lydia Harris of Morton, Lilly Norah of Ft. Washakie, Tinnie Coando of Ft. Washakie, Bertha Norman of Ft. Hall, Idaho; stepbrothers Val Norman and Alfred "Dutch" McAdams Sr. of Ft. Washakie; his grandfather Birdick Addison of St. Stephens, 35 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He will lie in state at the McGill family home on the North Fork Road at Ft. Washakie from 4 p.m. Wednesday until noon Thursday.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Lander. Military graveside services will be performed by the Richard Pogue Post of the American Legion. Burial will be at the Sacajawea Cemetery at Ft. Washakie.

PAINTER - Wilamina Louise "Billie" Painter

Louise Painter died Friday

Longtime Dubois resident Wilamina Louise "Billie" Painter, 73, died Friday following a lengthy illness.

She died at Westward Heights Nursing Home in Lander.

She was born Jan 29, 1907 in Billings. She married Frank Painter, who preceded her in death in 1966.

She lived for many years in Dubois where she worked as a nurse's aide and cook.

She had lived at Westward Heights for several months.

She has no survivors in this area.

Funeral services are schedule for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Dubois. The Rev. Burdette Stampley will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Dubois Cemetery.

PUCKETT - Mary B. Puckett

Mary Puckett Service

Funeral services for Mary B. Puckett of Riverton will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Davis Funeral Home.

Mrs. Puckett died Monday, December 7 at Riverton Memorial Hospital. She was 89 years old.

The Rev. J. Holland Vernon will officiate at the service with burial in the Veteran's section at Mountain View Cemetery.

Mrs. Puckett was born February 1, 1892 in Allen County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Ella and Bethuel M. Hall.

A Registered Nurse by profession, Mrs. Puckett served in the Army Nurse Corp during World War I. She also worked as a nurse in Lima and Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Mrs. Puckett made her home in Pampa Texas prior to moving to Riverton.

She is survived by one son, David H. Shoup of Riverton; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

WILKINS - William W. "Bill" Wilkins

Funeral services for William W. "Bill"Wilkins

Funeral services for William W. "Bill" Wilkins, 73, a former U.S. Steel employee and state safety engineer, are scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

Mr. Wilkins died on Thursday in American Fork, Utah.

Born Sept 28, 1911, in Provo, Utah, he married Allean Janis on June 7, 1933, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He worked 43 years for U.S. Steel, 11 of those years in Lander at the Atlantic City mine. He was a supervisor of safety.

After his retirement from U.S. Steel, he was appointed state safety engineer by Gov. Stan Hathaway, a position he held for five years.

He then retired and moved to 574 S. Fourth East in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

Mr. Wilkins was active in the LDS Church.

He and his wife had three children, Colleen W. Judd, Charles W. Wilkins and Alan J. Wilkins. He had 17 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

LeCLAIR - Edmo "Buddy" LeClair Jr.

No funeral services were scheduled for Edmo "Buddy" LeClair Jr., 59, of Fort Washakie, who was cremated.

Mr. LeClair Jr. died on Monday from a heart attack while fishing in the Wind River in Wind River Canyon.

Mr. LeClair, foreman for the Shoshone Enterprise, was born Dec 28, 1925 at Fort Washakie to Edmo LeClair Sr. and Esther A Stephens LeClair.

Survivors include his mother; wife, Iris LeClair; daughter Phyllis Lewis of Riverton; brothers Edward A. LeClair of Fort Washakie and William R. LeClair of Riverton; sisters, June Boyd and Mary Allen, both of Fort Washakie; a grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be made to the Wyoming Heart Institute in care of Sherry Mesa at Lander Valley Regional Medical Center.

LUXON - Ruth Cover Luxon

Funeral services for Ruth Cover Luxon, 80, a Lander resident, are scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Lander.

A prayer service will be held at Hudson's Funeral Home on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Mrs. Luxon died on Tuesday at Lander Valley Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Born Aug 1 1904 to John and Lily Messanger Cover in New Bedford, Pa., she was reared in Youngstown, Ohio, and married Harold W. Luxon in November 1924, in Youngstown, Ohio.

Survivors include sons Harold Luxon Jr. of Lander and Donald R. Luxon of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Other survivors are five grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Luxon moved to Lander in August 1978, where she made her home with her son Harold.

She was preceded in Death by her parents, husband and 11 brothers and sisters.

ENGAVO - Richard "Dick" Engavo

A vesper service for Richard "Dick" Engavo, 91, a Fort Washakie area rancher and Indian ceremonial song techer, will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday at his home on Mill Creek.

His body will be taken to the home at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sacajawea Cemetery.

Mr. Engavo died at his daughter's home seven and one-half miles northwest of Fort Washakie on the North Fork Road on Saturday at 6:15 a.m.

Mr. Engavo, who was born on Feb 1, 1893 in Fort Washakie to Sam and Inga (Allen) Engavo, raised cattle and horses in the Fort Washakie area and was a rodeo stock contractor and active rodeo participant, too.

He taught ceremonial Indian songs, too.

His wife Lydia (Panzetanga) Engavo preceded him in death in July 1968.

Survivors include a daughter Alberta Roberts, 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, son, four sisters and seven brothers.

OLDMAN - Thomas John Oldman Jr.

Services for Thomas John Oldman Jr. of Arapahoe were scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephens Indian Mission with Father Joe Damhorst officiating.

Burial was in the Arapahoe Catholic Cemetery with committal rites by Post 84 of the American Legion.

His body was found last Wednesday by police in an abandoned car near Sand Draw Road.

According to results of a coroner's investigation in Larimer County, Colo., at a forensics lab, he died in August from a blow to the back of the head.

Born January 29, 1954, in Riverton to Thomas John Oldman Sr and Matilda Spoonhunter Oldman, he married Karen Baxter. He worked as a laborer at Arapahoe Ranch.

Survivors include his father; son Waylon Oldman of Nebraska; brother Lyle Furlong and half brother Arthur; and sister Carol Oldman.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clara and Arthur Jack Spoonhunter, his mother and a sister.

Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth Wadley, a resident of Fremont Manor, 70, of Riverton were scheduled for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Grayson Gowen officiating.

Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery with committal rites by Rebecca Lodge.

She died on Saturday at Riverton Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb 15, 1913, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Albert Priebe and Berta Ground Priebe, she married William LeRoy Wadley June 15, 1931 in Denver.

She moved to Riverton in 1937, then moved to Worland and back to Riverton in 1944.

She belonged to the Mountain View Extension Club, the Rebecca Lodge, was a past deacon of the United Presbyterian Church, a member of the Presbyterial Women's Association, the nominating committee chairperson of the Wyoming State Presbyterial Association.

Her hobbies were sewing, knitting and crocheting.

Survivors include her son, Marvin A. Wadley of Riverton; daughters Lois Punteney of Big Piney and Betty Jean Foster of Kelso, Wash; brother Harless Priebe of Lakewood, Colo; sisters Mable Carroll of Wichita Falls and Grace Moss of Fort Worth, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Memorials can be sent to the United Presbyterian Church.

DILLAVOU - Paul Theodore Dillavou

PAVILLION'S DILLAVOU DIED FRIDAY

Paul Theodore Dillavou, 67, of Pavillion, died Friday, March 7, 1986 at Riverton Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Dillavou was born on October 5, 1918 in Beulah, Wyoming to Perry and Carol Dillavou.

In 1978 he came to Pavillion from Aladdin, Wyoming to work for the Midvale Irrigation District.

He married Janet Cress on November 22, 1980 in Riverton.

His hobbies included gardening and guiding hunters.

Mr. Dillavou is survived by his wife, Janet, of Pavillion; sons Dennis of Colorado Springs and Jim of Sturgis, South Dakota; daughters Darlene Watson of Riverton, Sherry White of Salt Lake City and Carolyn Marchant of Aladdin, Wyoming; step-daughters Mary Forester of Casper, Karen Gold of Riverton; stepsons Tony Gold of Casper, Roger Gold of Atlanta Georgia and Raymond Gold of California; 17 grandsons, 2 granddaughters and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Stella, in 1975, one son, one brother and one sister.

Services were held at the Methodist Church in Sundance Wyoming at 11 a.m. Monday March 10. Burial will be in Beulah, Wyoming.

THOMPSON - Doris Mae Thompson

DORIS MAE THOMPSON

Doris Mae Thompson of Riverton died at 3:38 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 1989 at her home. She was 80.

Born May 24, 1909, in Arapahoe, Neb., she was the daughter of John Henry Wilson and Mabel Ella Thompkins Wilson. She lived in Nebraska until age 9, when her family moved to Arvada, Colo. She was graduated from Arvada High School in 1926.

She married Harold Calvin Thompson Sr. on Sept. 16, 1926, and they farmed in the Westminster and Denver areas until his retirement.

Mrs. Thompson moved from Denver to Douglas in 1983, where she lived with her daughter, Norma until 1985. At that time, she moved to the Riverton area and lived with her daughter, Mary. Since 1986, she lived with Norma in Riverton and spent the last six months with Mary (while in the care of both Norma and Mary)

Mrs. Thompson and her husband were members of the North Presbyterian Church in North Denver for many years. She was a member of the Fortnightly Club in Westminster, Colo., for several years and bowled in a league for years. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and was an avid reader. She was a member of the Holiday Hills Community Club.

Survivors include one son, Harold Calvin Thompson Jr. of Bennett, Colo.; two daughters, Norma Alys Thompson of Casper and Mary Lee Thompson-Parker of Riverton; seven grandsons, 3 granddaughters, two step-grandsons, three great-granddaughters and one great-grandson, plus a step-mother, Lula Wilson of Denver, and sister Alys Obluda of Westminster, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one sister.

Services will be at Crown Hill Chapel of the Moore-Howard Mortuary in Denver on Tuesday, Feb 7, at 1 p.m.
