REGISTER CLIFF IN PLATTE COUNTY "Site of Seth E. Ward trading post; thousands of emigrants carved their names here in the 1850's and later; the earliest date was 1842. Wheels of covered wagons on the Oregon Trail wore ruts four feet deep in sandstone near here; the trail is still visible. Messages for those to follow were also carved or written in axle grease on cliff. Three generations left their marks here: T.H. Unthank, 1850; O.N. Unthank, 1869; O.A. Unthank, 1931. There is an Indian burial ground on the summit of the cliff." Excerpt from Wyoming Place Names, by Mae Urbanek Spectacular view at sunset by Rich Gibson http://www.journalsonline.com/pix/ac/ae14.htm Read more about it at: Wyonebtourism.com - http://www.wyonebtourism.com/NorthP/Register_Cliff/default.htm as well as the Oregon Trail Ruts site nearby - http://www.wyonebtourism.com/NorthP/TrailRuts/default.asp Ft. Laramie is nearby as well. This site is currently down but we hope to see them get it back up soon. All of these are part of the OREGON TRAIL which started at Ash Hollow, Nebraska, near Ogallala, and headed west. |
We are starting to work on the following. Looking for submissions, lookup volunteers, transcribers.
