| Established in 1867 and named after Union General David A. Russell. Originally built to protect the railroad builders. It grew to be one of the nation's largest military posts during World War I. In 1930 it was renamed Fort Francis A. Warren, honoring U.S. Senator Francis A. Warren who served for 37 years. It later became Warren Air Force Base and still exists today. |
